In 2011, the National Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial was opened in Washington DC on the national mall. The address of the memorial, 1964 Independence Avenue pays homage to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The memorial was created to honor the life and work of Dr. King for his dedication, sacrifices, and impact on the Civil Rights Movement.
Dr. King was known for his fiery speeches in which he called on ALL Americans to engage in political action to persuade and pressure government officials/policy makers to take action on the issues plaguing the nation. When we picture the movement, the image of Dr. King is typically who we picture, and is often described as the leader of the movement.
However, Dr. King acknowledged that his role was to organize a movement for ordinary citizens to gain civil rights for all. Today, it is tempting to look back and recall Dr. King's fiery speeches and sermons and view him and the movement as the same, but Dr. King did not work alone. Work was carried out by hundreds of small groups and organizations that shared the same dreams of Martin Luther King Jr., who also made sacrifices to see the movement progress over the course of the years even though many of their names are now lost to history.
Knowing that MLK Jr. encouraged participation and worked alongside countless individuals to achieve the same goals, which other activist(s) would you incorporate in the D.C. memorial to Martin Luther King Jr.?
